Sailing

I’m particularly fond of these sailboat pictures. They are rooted in my soul.
The sea has ever played a major part of my life. Now that I’m not living in a seaside town anymore, I must content myself with closing my eyes and pretending to feel on my face the wind that carries with it that special briny scent of seaweed and seems to wipe the cobwebs off my heart.
When I was a child in the small Venetian port town where I was born, it took no more than a few steps from Grandpa’s home to have a swim.
Then as a grownup I’ve enjoyed my most enthralling vacations on a sailboat, my sweetheart and me alone and bare in the sun on a tiny 18-feet nutshell, zigzagging through the most remote, desert and unspoilt little islands of the Dalmatian coast and eagerly savoring their unspeakable beauty.
In clear weather the northeast wind was usually rather strong there, seldom strong enough to raise nasty waves but almost always to make so many white foamy wild crests surfing on which felt really like flying.
Not always was the weather so friendly though: sometimes it was badly vicious and a couple of times we felt like we were looking the Reaper straight in the eyes. But as luck would have it we muddled through each time and never regretted a single moment of it.

Then our work dragging us frantically throughout Europe, a son showing up at the age at which our elderly used to become grandparents, a set of unexpected changes in our world… well, we turned over a new leaf, new life, new habits. But those fond memories remain, no wind will ever be strong enough to blow them away.
